HealthiNation announced today that it has been awarded the Health Content Provider accreditation from URAC, a Washington, DC-based health care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry. HealthiNation is the first and only health video company to receive URAC accreditation.
Research shows that year after year Americans are concerned about the reliability of health information they get from consumer media, such as television shows and the web. With the growing popularity of celebrity doctors and medical sitcoms, the need to set standards for content accuracy becomes more and more apparent.
“With tens of millions of people turning to the web and television for health information, the question becomes whether all of this information is making Americans smarter or more confused about their health,” said Dr. Holly Atkinson, Chief Medical Officer, HealthiNation. “As providers of health information, we feel a responsibility to ensure that our content is medically accurate, and the validation of this effort from an organization that sets standards in a number of arenas for the entire healthcare industry is a deeply rewarding achievement.”
URAC developed the health content provider accreditation program to address the concerns of consumers and other health care stakeholders and to provide a tool with which to identify health content within health web sites and via other media that meet high standards of editorial quality and accountability. The enhanced standards require health content providers to develop editorial policies and apply these policies to all health content carrying the health content seal licensed to other web sites.
“URAC employs a rigorous set of standards for each of its accreditation programs and adapts these requirements in response to the continuing evolution of the health care system,” said Alan P. Spielman, URAC president and CEO. “Providing quality health information is crucial to our nation’s welfare and it is important to have organizations like HealthiNation that are willing to measure themselves against national standards.”
“We made a commitment to establish HealthiNation first and foremost as a brand that consumers can trust,” said Raj Amin, CEO, HealthiNation. “As we continue to grow our audience and expand our programming, our URAC accreditation as a Health Content Provider lets viewers know they can depend on us for credible answers to their health questions.”
HealthiNation’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Holly Atkinson, led the URAC accreditation process. The URAC standards look closely at a number of different areas, including organizational policies and structures, disclosure, health content, quality oversight and accountability.
