Happy Kids Make for Happy Holidays
Parenting expert Ann Pleshette Murphy offers 5 smart tips
for family gatherings.
1) Tell kids that hugs and kisses are nice, not necessary.
Explain that they don't have to kiss every relative but they do have to make
eye contact, smile, and say hello. Sulking: not okay.
2) Keep little ones as much on schedule with naps and meals
as possible. It's often not fully possible but some routine is better than
none.
3) If finances are tight, trade old traditions (presents for
all) for new ones (presents just for kids).
4) Avoid stress contagion. Whether you're running late or
overwhelmed by logistics, take an emotional breath. Kids thrive when mom and
dad are relaxed... and jolly!
5) Bend the rules.
Say okay to 15 mini-marshmallows in a cup of cocoa or extra video game
time with cousins. Family holidays should be happy for all!
