One of the side effects of chemotherapy is fatigue. For some patients, their cancer fatigue is so profound they describe it as paralyzing. In this video, Dr. Paul Knoepflmacher shares some tips on how to combat exhaustion. These include exercising, eating well and getting the proper amount of sleep at night.
Exercising is good, even if it's just a short walk. 15 to 30 minutes a day is a good goal, but anything you can do to keep active will be good for you.
Eating well can be difficult, especially when you don't want to eat at all. A lost of appetite is normal so try your best to eat nutritious meals. Eating smaller meals more often may help as well.
Getting rest is also very important. Ideally, you should sleep at least eight hours every night. Likewise, naps can be very helpful, but limit them to about an hour at a time during the day, as longer naps may disrupt your sleep at night.
If you're feeling very tired or warn out, talk to your doctor. There are medications that can help treat some conditions like anemia that may be caused by your treatment. Keep your doctor updated on how you feel throughout your treatment.
