In this episode of True Champions, Shonda Schilling discusses her son’s diagnosis withAsperger’s syndrome and how it has affected the family. She noticed behavioral differences between her children and wondered why one of her sons was not responding or acting the way children typically do. Upon taking her son to the doctor, Shonda expected an ADHD diagnosis or something along those lines, only to receive a shocking Asperger's diagnosis. Before receiving the diagnosis, Shonda was unaware the autism spectrum was so broad. Having received the diagnosis, she has realized that not all Asperger'schildren are alike. For example, she notes that many children with the syndrome shareAsperger's symptoms such as avoiding making eye contact, yet her son does not have an issue with that. As a mother of a child with Asperger's, Shonda is now able to appreciate all that makes her son Grant special and unique, as well as that of all others who have the syndrome.
