Registered Dietitian Sharon Richter shares some smart grocery shopping tips on where to find heart healthy foods and on lowering triglyceride levels.

In this video, Registered Dietitian Sharon Richter explores the grocery store and shares some smart grocery shopping tips on how and where to find heart healthy foods.

When looking out for your triglyceride levels, there are extra things to keep in mind. When trying to keep levels low, we want to stay away from saturated fats. In the dairy aisle, look for low fat options such as 1% and skim milk, reduced fat yogurt and cottage cheese. However, your best bet is fish, especially fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, trout and sardines.

Managing your triglycerides also means choosing good carbs over bad carbs. This means keeping complex carbohydrates in and simple sugars out. To do this, look for labels that say whole wheat or whole grain.

To control your triglycerides, it's also important to make good food choices, control your portions and exercise. There are many different options when it comes to heart healthy foods so make sure that you pay attention to food labels next time you're at the grocery store!
