If you’re a self-identified smoothie fanatic but are tired of slurping on the same strawberry-banana, this pineapple and turmeric smoothie from wellness chef Charles Chen will breathe new life into your blender.
Chen is a chef, entrepreneur, and vivacious host of the online cooking show Kitchen Hustle, where “hustlers learn how to fuel their passions.” Throughout his childhood, Chen struggled with his health. As a teenager, he was prediabetic and a self-proclaimed couch potato who had no energy or motivation to make healthier choices. After hitting what he calls his “rock bottom moment,” he reclaimed his health, lost more than 100 pounds, and now helps others fuel their “bodies, mind, and spirit starting in the kitchen.”
Flavor-wise, this tropical smoothie is a burst of coconut, pineapple, banana, and lemon. Nutrition-wise, it’s a tasty source of fiber (thanks, chia seeds!), vitamin C (lookin’ at you, pineapple!), and potassium (all hail that banana). Plus, turmeric has long been used as a natural supplement in many cultures, although its medical benefits are still being studied.
In addition to the addition of turmeric, this smoothie also contains an ingredient known as collagen powder. It is an animal-derived protein powder (not suitable for vegetarians or vegans) that you can add to just about anything. If it’s too tough for you to track down in your own store, you could always swap with another protein powder (or omit it altogether).
