What is insulin and how does insulin work?

Here are five things you should know about insulin:

1. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas in response to oral glucose.

2. It lowers a person's blood sugar level and it is also a medication that many people with diabetes take as part of their treatment.

3. Insulin usually comes in the form of an injection that patients can give to themselves on their own.

4. There are three different types of insulin - each one required for a specific type of diabetes and meal time.

5. Insulins all reduce glucose levels, however the insulins differ based on how quickly they are absorbed, how long they take to achieve their peak effect, and how long they last.
