Childproofing Cabinets + Drawers: What Items to Lock Up
These items can put your little ones in danger.
The cabinets and drawers in our homes hold, well, anything and everything that can fit inside (junk drawer, anyone?). Behind these slabs of wood you might find medicines, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and other small objects. While you may assure yourself that these items are safely stored away, curious children looking for something to play with or eat can find them easier than you think.
Home accidents are among the top causes of childhood injury and death. That’s why it’s critical to know which items can cause harm to your little ones, and how to lock them up safely.
Childproofing: Hazardous Items to Lock Up
Kids love to put stuff in their mouth, and many poisons can look appealing. Lock up:
- Colorful laundry pods
- Cleaning supplies
- Medicines
- Toiletries, such as mouthwash or makeup
- Alcohol
Keep small objects secure and out of reach. Items such as these are choking hazards:
- Craft supplies
- Office supplies
- Toys
- “Button” batteries or other small batteries
Plastic bags may be enticing for kids to play with. These can cause suffocation:
- Grocery bags
- Trash bags
- Dry cleaning bags
- Packaging bags
- Food storage bags
Sharp items or weapons should always be out of a children’s reach. These items can cause severe injury or death:
- Matches
- Lighters
- Knives
- Scissors
- Guns
How to Keep These Items Locked and Secure
All of these dangerous items should be kept out of reach or secured within cabinets, closets, drawers, or bins with childproof safety latches and locks. Even items with child-resistant packaging, like medicines, should be locked away and kept out of reach: This packaging is not childproof.
Many latches and locks are inexpensive and can be found online or at your local hardware, baby equipment, or drug store. Find devices that are easy for adults to install and use, yet sturdy enough to withstand pulls and tugs from your kiddo.
