Dangers of Secondhand Smoke

What are the dangers of secondhand smoke and how can we protect others, especially our children, from being affected by it?

Smoking directly causes cancer and other serious disease such as asthma and infections in the lungs and ears. Secondhand smoke is harmful, especially to children whose lungs are still developing. As a society we've taken steps to protect people from secondhand smoke. The dangers of secondhand smoke from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes come from the fact that it contains chemicals and particles we know cause cancer.

In order to protect your kids from breathing in secondhand smoke, the best thing to do is to quit smoking. You should also avoid smoking at home or in enclosed spaces. You can also make sure to avoid situations and areas in which there are several smokers, and walk away if you're close to a source of secondhand smoke.
