Depression: Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is one an effective treatment option for depression. Dr. Susan Samuels discusses the three main types of psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy is an effective treatment option for depression. It involves going to see a therapist on a regular basis, often once a week. There are three main types of psychotherapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is focused on thoughts, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, which is focused on feelings, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, which is focused on your life story.

The concept behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that if we can change how we think about something, we can then change how we feel and how we behave. Interpersonal Psychotherapy focuses on the way people interact with others when they are depressed. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is the most widely practiced type of psychotherapy in the United States. It focuses on how your experiences growing up effect how you feel.
