It is known that sunlight can help dry up acne. However, sunlight also contains ultraviolet rays which can cause skin cancer. But research shows that there are non-ultraviolet light therapy options that work to treat acne.
Blue light therapy is one type. A study of blue light therapy showed a 50% reduction of blackheads and a reduction of more than 30% of whitehead pimples. Blue light therapy can be done at home, and works best when it is used about once a day.
There are other types of light therapy available. Lasers can also be used to treat acne. Sometimes a combination of lights and medications is used. So if your acne breakouts are not responding to traditional acne treatments, talk to your dermatologist about light therapy and whether it is right for you.
