Diagnosed with Hidradenitis Suppurativa? What You Need to Know

Get the facts about HS disease from a dermatologist.

Dr. Bobby Buka explains that Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a complex inflammatory condition that affects the groin and the underarm as well as sometimes the breast tissue. Hidradenitis Suppurativa can cause both pain and inflammation.

It is still unknown what the exact cause for HS is. The leading theory is that there is a bacterium that lives on the surface of the skin and it should be ignored by the immune system but instead the immune system has an allergic reaction to it and attacks it. Some patients only get it in their underarms, others have it in their groins, and sometimes it involves the breast tissue or the buttocks or a combination of some of these.

The severity of HS varies tremendously, not only in distribution, but also in the timing of these cyst outbreaks. Some cysts can be chronic and others can occur less often depending on the severity of the condition. They can occur every day or once a month, or even once every several months depending on the patient.

If you are living with this condition, Dr. Bobby Buka suggests you include an antimicrobial wash in your shower and also to see a board certified dermatologist to get on some novel therapies. There are a number of HS patients who are under very good control under these agents.
