- 00:03 Trying to fix your life is a lot like trying to undo a huge knot in
- 00:08 a big ball of twine.
- 00:10 You have to go backwards, tracing your way through your mistakes and
- 00:14 your traumas, looping upside down and inside out.
- 00:19 You get through a clump and sit back and think, there.
- 00:21 And suddenly you realize that you have unraveled only one knot of 1,000 knots.

- 00:39 I don't think I really got real help for
- 00:41 my depression until I was admitted to hospital.
- 00:45 My first treatment for my depression was an antidepressant.
- 00:49 I was scared to death, but in the hospital I got assigned to a psychiatrist and
- 00:55 I had someone to talk to about my feelings.
- 00:59 And that was the real beginning of my treatment.
- 01:03 Right now I'm on medication for my depression.
- 01:07 It's taken probably over ten years to find the right combination of
- 01:10 medications that help me function.
- 01:13 And I also see a therapist.
- 01:16 I see her twice a week and I've seen her for many years now and I really trust her.
- 01:24 And I think psychotherapy has been the biggest help for
- 01:30 me in coping with my depression.
- 01:34 I find a lot of support through my family, my parents and
- 01:38 my pets [LAUGH], and my sister, she's close to my age.
- 01:46 We have a lot in common, obviously.
- 01:48 She knows me, [LAUGH].
- 01:49 She's known me her whole life.
- 01:54 So, we're on our way to go meet Allie who's my sister.
- 01:58 And it's, it's funny when we buy stuff together because we're told
- 02:03 to say please and thank you at all the right times.
- 02:05 So we just end up saying the same thing at the same time, and
- 02:09 then laughing, and then saying sorry all at the same time.
- 02:13 And it's embarrassing, but awesome.
- 02:17 [LAUGH].

- 02:24 Do you wanna go to the Locomotive with us for lunch and coffee maybe?
- 02:27 >> Yeah, I love coffee.
- 02:29 >> Cool.
- 02:31 She helps me see things in myself that I've lost sight of,
- 02:36 and she doesn't judge me for it.
- 02:38 >> [INAUDIBLE]
- 02:39 >> I don't normally miss it at all but I'm gonna get that new CD.
- 02:43 >> It's like, it sounds like old jazz.
- 02:45 I think you'll like it.
- 02:46 >> Nice.
- 02:49 >> I think she considers me one of her best friends.
- 02:51 And, and so we have a lot of good times together and
- 02:55 even when I'm having a bad day she can make me laugh.
- 02:59 Or, remind me of things that I like to do or
- 03:02 just get me out of my head for a little while and that's hugely helpful.
- 03:08 So it's really important to have a friend like that.
- 03:13 I don't think that my depression can be cured.
- 03:15 I don't think they're gonna come up with a vaccine against depression.
- 03:18 I think my, my cure for my pain is, yes,
- 03:24 seeing my therapist and taking medications.
- 03:27 But it's also knowing who I am as a person.
- 03:30 And what I like, and what gives me meaning, and
- 03:34 try to do more of those things.
