In this episode of True Champions Depression, Julie speaks about ECT, and other forms of treatment that have helped her manage her depression.
In this episode of True Champions Depression, Julie speaks about the treatment she says saved her life, ECT, or electroconvulsive therapy.
Although she did not undergo ECT, or electroconvulsive therapy, willingly, she recognizes that it was incredibly beneficial to treating her depression. Julie is not currently using ECT for her depression, and she says she hopes to never reach the point to where she needs it again. Today, she tries to treat her problems while they’re small and keep them from reaching a point that leads to another major depressive episode.
Julie’s depression treatment today is much less severe – she takes a daily small dosage of an antidepressant, she sees her psychiatrist about once a year, and she has a psychologist for when she reaches critical points and needs help getting back on track. Julie also focuses on her nutrition. She takes a vitamin D supplement during the winter to counteract lack of sunlight. Julie also does a lot of exercise, which she says is critical to her mental illness.
Other life choices such as getting enough sleep, enjoying the arts and taking enough time for herself as well as her support from her family and friends also help her live well despite her depression.
