Is your motivation coming from the right place?
Weight loss isn’t easy—everyone can agree on that. One of the most important (and underrated) players in your weight loss success is your motivation, according to wellness chef Charles Chen.
And it’s not just how motivated you are, but where your motivation comes from. Are you eager to show off abs at the beach? Flaunt new biceps in your sleeveless tops? Fit into your jeans from 10 years ago?
“That’s the wrong approach to look at health,” says Chen. “Health is a lifestyle. It’s not just a quick fix.”
Chen is a chef, entrepreneur, and vivacious host of the online cooking show Kitchen Hustle, where “hustlers learn how to fuel their passions.” Throughout his childhood, Chen struggled with his health. As a teenager, he was prediabetic and a self-proclaimed couch potato who had no energy or motivation to make healthier choices. After hitting what he calls his “rock bottom moment,” he reclaimed his health, lost more than 100 pounds, and now helps others fuel their “bodies, mind, and spirit starting in the kitchen.”
Chen says his secret to finding (and staying at) a healthier weight was appreciating the way better-quality food made his body feel. With this holistic approach, he didn’t feel “deprived” by the healthy foods; instead, his food choices were finally allowing him to thrive.
“It’s about baby steps,” Chen suggests. “Every single day you do something good for yourself. Add that one smoothie for a whole week and see how your body feels.”

00:00.000 --> 00:01.711
00:01.711 --> 00:04.691
My name is Charles Chen,
I am a wellness chef.
00:04.691 --> 00:10.351
I gained over 100 pounds,
I was pre-diabetic, I had heart problems.
00:10.351 --> 00:13.511
Food actually saved my life,
I transformed my life through food.
00:13.511 --> 00:23.423
00:23.423 --> 00:27.462
A lot of people come to me and they say,
hey, I wanna lose this last ten pounds.
00:27.462 --> 00:30.323
I wanna fit into this bikini,
I wanna get a six pack.
00:30.323 --> 00:34.463
And I always say, that's the wrong
approach to look at health.
00:34.463 --> 00:38.963
Health is a lifestyle, it's a holistic
approach, it's not just a quick fix.
00:38.963 --> 00:42.117
It didn't take you one night to
get where you are today, and
00:42.117 --> 00:44.463
it's not gonna take you
one night to fix it.
00:44.463 --> 00:48.722
So I always say, be patient,
put in the work, put in the effort, and
00:48.722 --> 00:49.903
00:49.903 --> 00:54.483
And it's about baby steps, every single
day you do something good for yourself.
00:54.483 --> 00:55.372
And that's why I said,
00:55.372 --> 00:57.783
pat yourself on the back if you
did something good for yourself.
00:57.783 --> 01:00.943
I say, add that one smoothie for
a whole week.
01:00.943 --> 01:03.698
See how your body feels,
you're gonna be rewarded,
01:03.698 --> 01:07.203
because you're body's like,
my gosh, I'm so happy, right?
01:07.203 --> 01:08.343
And you're gonna have more energy.
01:08.343 --> 01:11.066
So it's not just about getting
into those pair of jeans,
01:11.066 --> 01:12.663
it needs to be something deeper.
01:12.663 --> 01:15.009
