Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Just What Is IBD?

The signs your stomach problems are more serious than you think.

Inflammatory bowel disease consists of two disorders: Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. IBD is a disorder that over 2 million people suffer from in some shape or form and some people have very mild forms of the disorder and work extremely productive and healthy lives.

Inflammatory bowel disease symptoms mask themselves a bit differently for the two different forms. For ulcerative colitis, diarrhea is typical, including frequently bloody diarrhea. For Crohn's disease, it can present itself with many different symptoms, including abscesses or infections, urinary tract infections, or even skin outpourings from fistulae.

In this video, Dr. Mark Babyatsky explains the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease and how they can affect your body. If you do have the disease, the symptoms can be set off by triggers, one of the most common being smoking cigarettes. However, IBD can be treated, so it's best to work with your doctor to find a plan that's right for you.
