Gear Up For Winter Sports

In episode 1 of Guide to Winter, host Kate Costello takes you to Mountain Creek, New Jersey and shows you how to gear up for winter sports. Before she can hit the slopes to learn the basics of skiing and snowboarding, Kate gets some advice on how to choose the right winter gear to keep you safe and warm during winter sports.

Kate speaks with ski instructor Katherine to find out what winter gear she'll need to stay safe and comfortable, starting from the inside out. First Kate looks for a good pair of socks that will keep her feet warm. The socks should extend all the way from the toes to above where the boot will hit your leg. She selects a pair of patterned wool socks, since wool will keep your feet nice and toasty. Next Kate selects a pair of waterproof ski pants. Ski pants will help keep you warm as well as dry when you're out on the slopes.

When selecting a top, you want a first layer that is light yet warm and will cover your throat. Katherine suggests wearing a vest over this base layer, since a vest will help keep your core warm. And of course, you will top these layers off with a warm, waterproof ski jacket.

Now it's time to pick out winter accessories. Gloves and mittens are both good options, but mittens will keep your hands warmer when it's extra cold outside. Next Kate tries on helmets, making sure the helmet fits snugly and securely around her head. A helmet is essential during winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding to protect your head and avoid injury. You will also need a pair of goggles, which will fit over the helmet. After picking up her rental equipment, Kate heads out fro ski lessons.

These 8 essential items will keep you safe and warm during skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports. Now you're ready to hit the slopes!
